Breaking Down the Season Finale of The Lying Game with Blair Redford
As Ethan, the “bad boy with a sensitive side,” Blair Redford has had his ups and downs during The Lying Game’s first season. Snakkle caught up with the dashing leading man to find out what’s in store for Ethan in the first-season finale and reflect on some roles past. By Danielle TurchianoSnakkle: We’ve learned a lot about Ethan this season, from his family background to his relationship with Sutton. What little surprises may be in store for fans in the finale?
Blair Redford: I’ve been really happy with the way the last five episodes of the season have gone, dealing with his past and his family. The next episode has a lot of stuff going on, and he’s kind of a nice part of it, but it’s mostly going to deal with the central mysteries that we’ve been trying to solve all season.
Snakkle: We hear Ethan makes a discovery in the season finale that may be a game changer. How does what he learns affect what’s to come in season 2?
Redford: Well, I think that that is probably referring to him seeing some things between Emma and Thayer.
Snakkle: So more trouble in paradise, more personal history and emotions getting in the way of that foursome making a really strong team?
Redford: If they were all nice to each other… they’d have this thing solved in no time, but they’re a bunch of teenagers, and they have libidos! But I honestly think they’re in a worse place starting next season than they were in this season because other relationships have formed, friendships have been broken, family ties have been broken. It’s way more complicated now!
Snakkle: Ethan is such a good guy, but he picked the worst time to come clean to Emma about kissing Sutton. Can their relationship recover from this?
Redford: It’s tough. There’s a lot of history there. It’s not like he kissed some random girl; he kissed the identical, evil twin of his girlfriend, so she does have a right to be upset.… But there is more than meets the eye. I don’t think he was lying when he said there was a lot going on. He was dealing with issues with his father, and he was on the run—possibly to go to jail for the rest of his life—and Sutton was acting like Emma, and she looks just like her, and it was intense. He made a mistake, but I’ve always said I think he’s one of the most honest characters in the series, and I think he proved it again by, as tough as it was, making sure she didn’t do anything she’d regret.
Snakkle: Ethan’s been through the ringer; is he in the clear now that his brother trusts his innocence? And will their relationship look a little different now that his brother does trust him?
Redford: One of my favorite things to shoot this whole season was the stuff with Ethan and his brother. I think they’ve come so far with their relationship and trusting each other and opening up to each other. Me and Tyler [Christopher], who plays my brother, we’ve said from the beginning that essentially they really only have each other.… As far as family goes, they only have each other to lean on, and [exploring that] has been one of my favorite story lines.
Snakkle: Going forward with another season, what are you hoping to explore that maybe you didn’t get to thus far?
Redford: Honestly, there was so much I wanted to explore when we started the first season, and to my surprise, the writers did all of [it already]. I haven’t thought too far ahead to season 2… but the only thing I could think of that they haven’t done with Ethan is, I’d like to see him have a hobby—just something else he’s interested in besides complicating the lives of these two girls! I feel like if he’s not dating one of them, he sits in his trailer reading automotive magazines. It might be nice if he had a hobby or something.
Snakkle: You spent time on two hit ABC Family shows this season, but what is the role you consider your big break? Take us back to that first big part.
Redford: If we’re talking about television, I would have to say probably 90210.… It seemed like once that came out and everyone saw the response from it, TV work just kind of came at me, and I had the choice about what I wanted to do.
Snakkle: It’s interesting you said 90210 and not Passions! Soap operas may be more of a niche, but that was a bit role, and it came first.
Redford: Daytime work is such a particular market, I wouldn’t consider that a huge break because you can do six months on it and not work for a while or you can do six years on it and not work for a while. I mean, before Passions, my first job out here was Young & the Restless, but that was a while ago!
Snakkle: So if you could go back to 90210 or Switched at Birth or even The Lying Game—any show you’ve worked on—and create your dream episode, what would your character do?
Redford: I could probably think of one for everything… but actually my roommate Mike came up with this idea [for Switched at Birth]. Ty went to Afghanistan, so let’s say a bomb goes off—like a roadside terrorist bomb or something—and it doesn’t kill Ty, but it seriously injures him and affects his hearing from the blast. So he has to come back because when you’re injured in such a way, the Army sends you home. So he comes home, and now he’s a deaf character, and he knew sign language because he grew up being friends with Daphne. And now he and Daphne are getting closer and closer because they share that now.
Snakkle: Well, you’re still in the ABC Family family; they can make that happen! Just hope between both shows!
Reford: [Laughs] That might wear me out, though!
The Lying Game airs on ABC Family on Monday nights at 9 p.m. The first-season finale will air on March 5, 2012.
